Summer has arrived in Southern Ontario, and we all can’t wait to get out, hit the beach and make the most of these short, warm months! While all that Vitamin D is great for your body, the heat, humidity and pool water isn’t always great for your hair. So whether you’re heading out on a summer vacation or just staying at home soaking up the sunshine, keep these tips in mind for keeping your hair healthy!

1. Cut the Heat

The last thing any of us wants to do on a hot, humid day is get out our heat styling products. Especially if you’re planning on spending the day in the sun, you should limit your use of hair dryers, curling wands and straightening irons. You should also consider investing in a deep conditioner, or just cover up with a stylish hat to keep those tresses protected from the sun’s rays.

2. Avoid Chlorine

If you love to spend the day by the pool, we don’t blame you, and you don’t have to completely limit your exposure to chlorine to keep your hair healthy. But it’s a good idea to avoid chlorine if you have bleached hair, or creative colours. Try rinsing your hair before you go swimming to prevent it from turning green. You can also use a clarifying shampoo on your hair after your swim to keep a handle on build up.

3. Skip a Wash or Two

In the summer, you may experience a more oily scalp than usual, as well as sweating, chlorine and saltwater exposure. But it’s important to try to ignore the urge to wash your hair too often. Your hair actually produces more oil the more you wash it, because you’re stripping it of its natural oils. Instead of washing, try using a dry shampoo whenever possible.

4. Hydrate Your Body

Keeping your body hydrated doesn’t just keep your body healthy, it keeps your hair healthy too! You’re likely sweating and losing more water during the summer, so drink more water than you would normally to stay hydrated. The water you drink also goes directly to your hair and scalp, keeping them hydrated and healthy. Try to drink two to three litres a day.
